Nicholas Saykaly, a 34-year-old construction worker from Manchester, NH, was in the vehicle at the Ramada Inn on the highway’s eastbound side when he drew the attention of Officers Mark Ciavirella and Ryan Vallaro as they conducted safety and security checks along the highway's business corridor just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Detective Capt. Laurence Martin said.
Saykaly was “agitated and acting in an animated manner,” Martin said.
Talking with him, the officers spotted a fully loaded magazine, along with a holster clipped to a sun visor, the captain said.
A search turned a Sig Sauer P226 .40-caliber handgun, along with 14 hollow-point bullets, 45 rounds of ball point ammunition and four other magazines, he said, adding that Saykaly was also carrying a morphine pill.
Saykaly was charged with drug and weapons possession counts, as well as possessing armor-penetrating ammunition. He also got a summons for having the illegal morphine in the Hummer.
He remained held in the Passaic County Jail following a detention hearing.
